Description
Except for the Motte, this is an easy flat 4.3 mile walk. We will see a Bronze age burial site which later became a Norman castle. Following a wooded brook down to where the battle of Winwick took place, ending Charles’s attempt to regain his crown. There is an option for an extra half mile to see the location of the Bloody stone.
Much history around the area, where Lord Hutchkinson was killed by the Rocket and the site of the death of the Northumbrian King Oswald in battle with King Penda of Mercia.
There is a café halfway at Red Bank. Paths can be quite muddy if there has been a period of rain. Good footwear and winter clothing are necessary.
