Description
The presence of natural brine springs exploited since Roman times, and of rock salt mined since the 17th century, made Northwich the cradle of Britain’s chemical industry.  Directly or indirectly, this has influenced all the landscapes on this walk. The Marbury Estate, the basis of today’s country park, was partly built on the wealth from the salt and was later owned by ICI, who used the hall (which is now demolished) for staff housing.
This is a lovely easy walk starting from Marbury Country Park, passing through beautiful woods alongside Budworth mere. We continue to the Trent and Mersey canal, before breaking off to walk to Haydn pool to pay a visit to the bird hide.
When we reach the Anderton boat lift and Museum we break for lunch. There is the café, but it may be closed so bring your own sandwiches and drink just in case or if you prefer.
We then continue alongside the canal towards Marbury Country Park and back to the car park where we started.
The round trip is approximately five and a half miles. Walking boots are recommended if there has been recent rain.
