Description

A walk from Manchester’s Canal Street to Ashton under Lyne along the canal.

Apart from a short walk across Ashton town centre this walk is almost entirely along the canal. It is therefore virtually flat and good underfoot. Distance approx. 6.5 miles.

From Canal Street we walk a short distance before joining the tow path and heading through New Islington, and then past the old mills of Holt Town before skirting the Sport City area. We then continue towards Droylsden after which the canal changes it’s personality, becoming greener and more pleasant. The last part where the canal skirts the edges of Ashton Town centre is particularly interesting with functioning mills and canal boats at the Portland Basin.

From Ashton walkers can return to Canal Street for a drink or make their way home.

Although there is a pub along the canal I suggest we should be self sufficient with food and drink as it may not be suitable for our group (but we could take a look – the Strawberry Duck).
