Description

An under 5 mile walk with very varied scenery and outstanding views not only of Pendle Hill. Following Pendle Water [dippers, kingfishers possibly] and calling in briefly at historic Clarion House we then lunch in Newchurch. We  then finish with a fine sometimes wooded ridge walk and an old trackway back to Barley. There is a bit of a climb for about half a mile up the road into and through Newchurch. The route is on tracks , occasionally muddy fields and minor roads. [It is possible to abort the walk and return easily to the start at two points].

Bring a packed lunch [although I would like to call in at the Clarion House for a quick cuppa about one and a half miles into the walk]. There is a  deservedly popular cafe in the car park at Barley and both the Barley Mow and the Pendle Inn have good reputations for dining.

History

There is an interesting short film Memories of the last Clarion House available on Youtube.

In Newchurch churchyard there is a grave of a member of the Nutter family . [Alice Nutter was one of the so-called Pendle Witches].
