Walk leaders : Cliff B & Colin P
Grading of walk : Challenging
Walk details : Beginning in the picturesque Derbyshire town of Castleton, our walk begins with a steady climb up the magnificent valley of Cave Dale at the rear of the eleventh century Peveril Castle. The route eventually flattens off and progresses along a well defined path through undulating stone-walled fields, where your ears will be delighted by the the songs of the ascending larks. We continue walking until we reach the steps and path which steadily climb to the summit of Mam Tor (the Shivering Mountain) at 1695ft (517m). At the summit we will have our refreshment stop and enjoy the wonderful views into the Vale of Edale and the Hope Valley. Our decent from Mam Tor is made via the wide steps and paths until we reach a point known as Hollins Cross. From here we follow a fairly steep path until reaching a sunken farm track leading back into Castleton.
Risk assessment : A risk assessment was carried out 02/06/2024. Going up Cave Dale, the path is made from lose limestone rocks which have the potential of being slippery in wet weather. The descent from Mam Tor is fairly easy until we reach Hollins Cross, where the path we require is quite steep for about 50 metres and it is not as well constructed as those making up the rest of the walk. Single file is the order of the day for this section of the walk. There are two ‘B’ roads to cross on the walk and care is needed in crossing these as this area attracts many tourists.
Start time and meeting point : Our meeting point is at the town’s Market Place near the Old Barn. Please see the What Three Words below. No later than 12:00 please.
Directions to the start : Take the A6 towards Buxton and then the A623 towards the village of Sparrowpit. Continue along the A623 until reaching the the junction signposted for Tideswell and Castleton. Turn left at this junction, at the Anchor Inn, and follow the B6049 through the village of Bradwell until you reach Hope. Take a left turn onto the A6187 towards Castleton. Find one of the many car parks before walking to the start point in the Town’s Market Place.
Parking: All the car parks are likely to require payment. We bought an all day ticket costing £8 at the car park belonging to The Peak Hotel. We recommend car-sharing in view of the distance involved and the cost of parking.
