Eccleston Chester Circular

May 19

Walk leader : Stephen M

Grading of Walk: Easy

Walk details : A scenic 6 mile walk beginning at the Duke of Westminster’s village of Eccleston. The walk begins outside the Parish Church from where we make our way down to the River Dee. We head towards Chester following the course of the river along well-marked paths through fields. We enter Chester, cross the chain bridge and descend to Chester Warf where we will have our refreshment stop. There should ample seating for the group and there are several ice-cream kiosks, cafes and toilets.

After lunch we walk along part of the Roman walls until we reach Chester Castle. We cross the river again and make our way to the Dukes’ Park by way of a short stretch of busy road. Our return journey is almost entirely within the Dukes’ Park until we reach the outskirts of Eccleston. When we reach the village, walkers will have the opportunity to visit the graves of the Earls and Dukes of Westminster.

Risk assessment : Date of risk assessment 18/03/2024. When the walk was reconnoitred, the part where we followed the banks of the river was quite muddy. We therefore recommend walking boots. The walk takes in a short stretch of busy road which requires care and attention.
