Chorlton Ees to Fletcher Moss, Didsbury

June 9

Walk leader :  Andrew J

Grading of walk: Easy

Walk details : This is an approximately 6 mile walk. It is a relatively easy and flat walk, mostly following wide paths along the river Mersey. Some of the paths may be muddy if it has rained. The walk is suitable for dogs. Indeed, we will encounter many dog walkers and their dogs along the route.  We will stop for lunch after about an hour. Please bring a packed lunch. There is a delightful café, the Alpine Tea Room, in Flethcher Moss park. We will return to the car park on Brookburn Road by Metrolink from Didsbury Village, alighting at Chorlton, then walking back to the car park on Brookburn Road. On our walk from Fletcher Moss park to the Metrolink in Didsbury Village we will be passing Anchors Fish and Chip shop. It’s my favourite chippy (take out only).

Fletcher Moss park contains a wide range of flora from redwoods to magnolia. It also contains many species of bird including the ring-necked parakeets, a non-native species, originally common to India and central Africa but now also found in Europe. Inside the park you will find the Alpine Rock Garden. Protected from the elements on a south-facing slope, the garden contains an array of Alpine flora.

PLEASE NOTE: As this is a linear walk, we will need to find our way back from Fletcher Moss to Chorlton Ees. The best option is to walk from Fletcher Moss to Didsbury Village Metrolink tram stop and get a tram from there to Chorlton, then walk to Chorlton Ees. The journey from Fletcher Moss back to Chorlton Ees will take approximately 40 minutes.

Risk assessment : Date of risk assessment 31/05/2024. The following risks have been identified and assessed:

As much of the walk is along the banks of the river Mersey there is a very small risk of falling into the water. However, the paths are wide, and the river is some way from the paths.

Almost all of the walk is along dedicated footpaths. We will have to cross roads in Didsbury Village but there are pedestrian crossings and these will be utilised.

The temperature is forecast to be 18 degrees on the day of the walk in Chorlton and Didsbury. This is a very comfortable walking temperature. No thunderstorms are forecast but there is a chance of light rain.

There will be a pre-walk briefing. The walk leader will hold a short safety briefing at the start and will remind walkers of any additional risk which may be encountered at appropriate points on the walk.
