Walk leaders : Malcolm C and John G
Grading of walk : Moderate
Walk details : The walk is about 5 miles of easy walking with one short gradient using field footpaths, tracks and roads (briefly) through woodland, by stream sides and reservoirs, and on moorland fringes with wide views. It is suitable for dogs and there is ample roadside parking. The lunch stop will be at Turton Tower picnic site; bring a packed lunch.
Of historical interest is the impressive red-brick Barlow Memorial Institute (1909) a charitable facility with cafe, bar, reading room, library, snooker room, recreation grounds and woods “to promote the health, education and well-being of the local community”.
Also Turton Tower, a scheduled ancient monument, built as a pele tower in the middle ages and extended in the 16th century.
Risk assessment : A risk assessment was carried out 06/03/2024. A summary of identified risks is below:
One footpath runs along side a stream which can sometimes be fast flowing. There are 2 main roads to cross with care and walk along briefly using the footpaths.
The walk leaders will remind walkers of any additional risk which may be encountered at appropriate points on the walk.
Start time and meeting point : Meet at 12.00 outside the Barlow Institute, 216 Bolton Rd. Edgworth. BL7 0AP. (GR 741165). The café may be open before 12:00 for coffee and there also is the celebrated ice-cream shop just up the road by the roundabout which I suspect also does drinks.
Directions to the start : Edgworth is north of Bolton 1 mile north of the A676 Bolton to Ramsbottom road. If you are using the M66 you could exit at J2 Bury and pickup the B6213 through Tottington. Slightly further but maybe easier exit at J1 into Ramsbottom to pick up the A676.
Parking: There is ample roadside parking near the Barlow Memorial Institute from where the walk starts.
