Walk leader : Patrick P Walk details : This is an easy, mainly flat, 5.5 mile walk that takes in part of the Rochdale Canal and a section of the Lakeside path. The trail is well established and wide. There are just 2 stiles to negotiate, one a wooden ladder stile and the other a metallic step stile. There is no livestock on this walk, which is very dog friendly. There will be a short stop for lunch near historic Clegg Hall. There is a large Cafe (The Woodlands) at the start/end of the walk, and a smaller Cafe by the Lakeside. There is a large parking area. Payment is by cash (£2 for 4 hours) or credit card at the machine opposite the Woodlands Cafe/RSPCA Animal Rescue Centre
Risk assessment : A risk assessment was carried out on 09/01/2024. A summary of identified risks is below:-
We will be walking on the Canal towpath for about a mile. It is wide and well established, but care needs to be taken as we will be near to water. The path is popular with other walkers, cyclists and occasional joggers, so please be aware of this and courteous to other users. The same applies when walking along the Lakeside path.
We will be crossing just one main road, but extra care should be taken as the crossing point is on a bend: check traffic both ways carefully before attempting to cross. We will also be walking up a short, country lane that is used occasionally by cars, so again, vigilance is advised.
Start time and meeting point : Meet in front of the Woodlands Cafe/RSPCA Animal Rescue Centre (OL15 0AQ) for a 12.30 start
Directions to the start : You can reach the staring point via the M62. Leave at J21, signposted Milnrow, and follow the brown signs to Hollingworth Lake. Follow the Lakeside road past the shops and turn right at the Wine Press Bistro (take care on this sharp bend). Take the first turn left to the RSPCA Centre/Cafe and park up (please remember to pay and display your ticket clearly).
