Middlewood Way and Macclesfield Canal circular

Grading of walk :  Moderate

Walk details :  Today’s walk is an easy, flat 6 mile walk on designated pathways by the Macclesfield canal and The Middlewood Way.  There are some steps down to the Middlewood Way where extra care should be taken. The canal footpath can be muddy in parts at this time of year and it is also narrow in places, so single file walking may be required. The walk is suitable for dogs. on and off the lead.

Risk assessment :  A risk assessment was carried out 27/01/2025. A summary of identified risks is below:

The canal path can be muddy in parts at this time of year, therefore risk of slipping and falling. The path is also narrow in parts so avoid going too near the bank edge, single file walking at narrow points. There is a steep stairway on the walk going down to the Middlewood way, please take care not to fall a this point.

Start time and meeting point :  Meet at the Nelson Pit visitor centre for 1200 hrs start (toilets available). Shrigley Road North. Postcode: SK12 1TH.

Directions to the start :  Take the A555 Manchester Airport link road follow for Poynton A5149 ( NOT THE POYNTON BY PASS ROAD) . You will come to 3 mini roundabouts go straight over down Park Lane . Follow the road, keep right where the road splits on to Coppice Road ( if you go left, it will take you to Nelsons pit but Coppice Road is a better road) Go along Coppice road for one mile and turn left on to Shrigley Road North. Nelsons Pit is half a mile on the right.

If anyone would like to share cars, then you are welcome to meet at my house in Sharston and park on my drive. I can take three people.

Parking:  Nelson Pit car park £3.70p for 10 hrs. Or, the  Boars head pub SK12 1TE,  free car park if using their facilities after the walk.

Public transport :  Trains are infrequent to Poynton station. I can arrange transport from Gatley Station or Benchill tram stop.
