Grading of walk : Easy
Walk details : This is a very pleasant walk, mostly on good paths. There is some woodland walking and in the event of recent rain this could become quite muddy, but the majority of the walk is on good quality paths. We start off at Worsley Delph (near Worsley Courthouse), walk through the woods to Old Warke Dam, then continue through the woods to Beesley Green – foodies will probably notice the proliferation of wild garlic on the route! We then take the Tyldesley Loopline to Parr Fold, passing some beautiful early 18th Century house, and head into the local park, where we´ll stop for lunch (there´s good seating, including a lovely café who said we can eat on the tables outside if we buy a drink/ice cream/similar). We´ll then take the Roe Green Loopline towards Roe Green, cut into this really lovely neighbourhood before re-joining the Loopline to head back to the Delph.
At the end of the walk, we found a lovely outdoor coffee kiosk, but if people feel like something stronger, Worsley Village offers a few options.
Risk assessment : A risk assessment was carried out 11/05/25. A summary of identified risks is below:
The walk is on well-defined paths, some through woodland but others paved or tarmac. There are several instances of steps to climb/descend, including some woodland steps which are somewhat uneven. Most of the walk avoids motor traffic, although there are some roads to cross, including a couple which are busy. At times, the woodland walking may present minimal risk of tripping on roots. Although most of the route is closed to cars, we did notice that it is popular with cyclists. As we approach midsummer, it would be strongly advised to use sun protection, although thankfully the vast majority of the walk enjoys lots of shade!
Start time and meeting point : We will begin at 12 noon at the car park on Barton Road, M28 2PD.
Directions to the start : Take the M60 exit 13, 3rd exit at the roundabout for the A572 towards Worsley Brow, then 2nd exit at the next roundabout for Barton Road – the car park is on your right just after you enter Barton Road.
Parking: This car park is free, but we noticed it filling up quite quickly so early arrival is encouraged. There is limited street parking nearby also.
