Walk leader : Andrew J
Grading of walk : Easy
Walk details : This is an easy walk which is approximately 5.5 miles in length. The terrain will be mostly canal paths with some busy roads to navigate. The walk is suitable for dogs but they will need to be kept on a lead due to busy roads and the proximity of water. Parking at the start point is available but expensive. Please note: this is a linear walk which starts at Manchester Piccadilly Station (entrance to Fairfield Street) to the Lowry Theatre, Salford. The return leg is via Tram (the easiest option). Please remember to bring your travel pass if you have one. We will be stopping for lunch half way into the walk. Please bring a packed lunch. For those interested, there is an option of having a drink at Salford Quays or returning to the village.
From Manchester Piccadilly train station (entrance to Fairfield street) we will walk to Mayfield Park, the city centre’s first new public park in over 100 years. The park covers 6.5 acres with 142 trees and 120,000 shrubs and plants. The river Medlock weaves its way around the park. From there we will walk via the village to join the Rochdale Canal, heading towards Castlefield and then join the Bridgewater canal via Pomona Strand. We will then join the Manchester Ship canal, crossing the Millennium Lift Bridge towards the Lowry Theatre.
Risk assessment : A risk assessment was carried out 18/10/2024. A summary of identified risks is below:
Please take care when walking on canal footpaths as they might be slippery. Canals can be hazardous so do not walk too close to the water’s edge. We will be walking across some busy roads at the start of the walk. Please use pedestrian crossings and take care when crossing the road.
The walk leader will hold a short safety briefing at the start and will remind walkers of any additional risk which may be encountered at appropriate points on the walk.
Start time and meeting point : 12.00 at Manchester Piccadilly Station, Fairfield Street entrance.

Public transport : The walk starts at Manchester Piccadilly Train Station. Please meet at the entrance/exit to Fairfield Street where you will find the taxi rank. The meeting point is close to where you alight if you are arriving by tram and is downstairs (ground floor) if arriving by train. If you use Google Maps it will tell you of the car parks nearby. As this is a linear walk, finishing at the Lowry Theatre, we will need to find our way back from there. The easiest way is to take a tram from MediaCityUK station to Manchester Piccadilly Station (or to another Metrolink destination).
