Philips Park

June 22

Walk leader :   Patrick P

Grading of walk :  Easy

Walk details :  This is an easy, dog friendly, 6 mile walk that takes in sections of 3 local country parks, starting at Phillips Park Whitefield.
Paths are generally well established, and the circular route takes in a variety of scenery, including mixed woodland and gardens, part of the River Irwell, a lake, and points of local and historic interest.
There are 2 short inclines to negotiate, one as we enter Phillips Park and the other near the end of the walk.
There will be a stop for lunch at the bridge by the lake, and a pub stop at the end of the walk for those who wish to partake of some liquid refreshment. Please note that there are no public toilets on the walk route

Risk assessment :  A risk assessment was carried out 06/06/2025.  A summary of identified risks is below:

The walk begins and ends on public roads for a short distance, so care needs to be taken. Some tracks are gravel and there is a small cobbled section that might be a little slippery. It may also be a little muddy in places if it has rained. The route is shared in places by cyclists, and there will be other dog walkers, so again show consideration for these.
Near the beginning and end of the walk we will be crossing 2 different pedestrian bridges over the M60, so take extra care on these.
Sections of the walk are alongside water: a river, lake, a pond and small streams, so be vigilant near these too.

Start time and meeting point :  The walk will start at 12.30.  Meet in the Aldi/McDonald’s (free) car park on Higher Lane, Whitefield (M45 7EA)

Directions to the start :  The starting point can be reached via road, bus and tram. If driving, you can take the A665, Bury Old Rd from Manchester centre (avoid the A56, Bury New Rd, as part of it will be closed on the day for Prestwich Carnival), or the M60 to Junction 17 (Prestwich/Whitefield); follow signs for Whitefield, and take the 3rd left (Higher Lane) to the Aldi car park.

Parking: Aldi/McDonald’s (free) car park

Public transport :  The 135 bus from Lever St stops just beyond the car park.  If coming by tram, take the Altrincham- Bury line (there are no trams from Piccadilly or Piccadilly Gardens at the moment) to Besses o’ th’ Barn station. Turn right out of the station onto Bury Old Rd, and walk for about 5 minutes to the 2nd set of lights, where you will see McDonald’s/Aldi on the opposite side

Contact number on the day :   If you need to cancel your place on this walk then please use this number to send a message to the walk leader.

Booking :  Book your place on the walk here

Changes and cancellation :  Very occasionally, due to severe weather or another serious event, a walk may be cancelled. In these instances, a note will be added to the website at least TWO HOURS before the start time. So, do check the website before you set out, and if in doubt use the walk leader’s mobile contact number. Every effort will be made to contact you should a walk be cancelled.
