On a perfect day for walking, 18 walkers set out from the boathouse on West Kirby’s seafront to walk across the sands to Hilbre Island. Crossing first to Little Island we then made our way to Hilbre Island. Dave H and Cliff B gave us a short history of the Island which is named after St. Hildeburgh. Thought to have been occupied since the Stone Age, the Island is now maintained as a sanctuary for wildlife.
We walked to the far end of the Island taking time to explore the, long abandoned lifeboat station and to view the abundant bird life and seal colony.
Making our way back to West Kirby we ended a very enjoyable excursion to Wirral with a visit to a local pub.
