Our dear friend Brian, a longstanding member of Out on Sunday, led this walk for the group in 2021. Sadly Brian died in 2022 and this walk was arranged to retrace the steps of that walk and also to remember Brian. Geraint W and Colin P led the group on a 6.4 mile circular walk starting and ending at the Otterspool Promenade on the north bank of the Mersey. The walk took in Otterspool Woods before crossing into Sefton Park, classified as a Grade One listed park by English Heritage. Among its many attractions are a boating lake; statues of Eros and Peter Pan and most notably the famous Victorian Palm House, which has been restored to its former glory. This was the ideal spot for our lunch stop and also an oppportunity to present Pat Murphy with a certificate of Honorary Life Membership in recognition of her her involvement with and support of the group since its very early days.
Carrying on, we passed through Prince’s Park, another of the city’s great parks, and on through the hamlet of St Michael’s through Priory Woods and on to the Festival Gardens – the site of the Liverpool Garden Festival held in 1984. The final leg of the journey along the waterfront brought us back to the start point. The walk was one of the highlights of 2023 – Out on Sunday’s Jubilee year.
