Description
Shutlingsloe is not very high, but despite this it commands an excellent view over the western side of the Peak District and the Cheshire Plain. In fact you can see the Clwyd hills in North Wales on a clear day, as well as features like the enormous Mark 1 radio telescope at Jodrell Bank.
The description of the hill as the ‘Matterhorn of Cheshire’ is more than a little fanciful for this hill rises to a mere 506 metres, and is actually lower than the Cat and Fiddle Inn on the hillside opposite, but when you see the hill then the phrase appears more apt, for Shutlingsloe is steep-sided and rises to a shapely cone at the top.
The walk is just over 7 miles and moderate in grade.
A beautiful walk with stunning views though forest and countryside.
Please wear sturdy boots as the paths could be muddy and going up and down the Tor is a little challenging but worth it for the spectacular views.
Bring sandwiches and drinks. There is a small mobile café near the visitor centre in the forest that serves lovely homemade cakes and pies tea and coffee. Here we can take a break.
There is also a pub towards the end of the walk which we may visit if we would like.

From Macclesfield follow the signs for the A537 to Buxton (Cat and Fiddle road)
You will come to a sign on the right Ankers Lane/Wildboarclough follow this downhill and turn to the right by the Stanley Arms pub where the road bends.
Keep on this road for 1.2 miles there is a small car park on the right – Clough Car Park Wildboarclough Grid Ref SJ 984706 Nearest postcode SK11 0BE Parking is free but the car park may be busy and if it is full there is another car park a little further down the lane.
