Out on Sunday logo

Please note that this week’s walk has been cancelled due to very poor weather forecast.

Heavy rain is forecast for Tintwisle on Sunday 3 March and for this reason the walk has been cancelled.  I hope that we will be able to do the walk at some point in April or May.

Description

This week’s walk is a moderate circular walk of some 6 miles from the village of Tintwistle which lies just north of Glossop at the western end of the Longendale Valley. The village is divided in two by the busy A628.  The older part of the village, where the walk begins, sits on the northern side of the road, set back on the valley side.  Some buildings in the old part of the village are said to date back to the 16th century, including the Bull’s Head public house where we might take refreshment at the end of the walk.  Part of the village is within the Peak Disdrict National Park and is designated a conservation area.

We leave the village along Arnfield Lane as far as Arnfield Farm and then follow the Pennine Bridleway and well marked paths until we arrive at Higher Swineshaw reservoir which we visited in March 2016. There are a couple of steepish sections on the way up to the reservoir but nothing more than “moderate”.  We will stop for our lunch break and enjoy the views at the reservoir before we return to Tintwistle along a different path via Swallows Wood and Arnfield reservoir near the village.  There is a variety of terrain – surfaced lanes at the start & end and good tracks and paths for most the remainder.  Some of the path on the return leg is rough stone for a short distance and please note that we will cross a shallow ford towards the end of the walk. There are also a few stiles along the route.  Walking boots strongly recommended as is suitable clothing for the weather conditions on the day.

Please bring water and whatever food you require as there will be nowhere along the walk to buy supplies, I didn’t notice any shops in the village either. At the end of the walk there is a pub The Bulls Head where those who want to can have a well deserved drink.  Food is also available here.

Dog owners please note

While the walk is suitable for dogs it passes through farmland with sheep grazing, there are notices that warn that dogs worrying sheep will be shot.
