Walk leader : Geraint W
Walk details :  This is a circular walk of approximately 8Km / 5 miles starting and ending in Disley village and will take us along part of the Gritstone Trail and through Lyme Park and *hopefully* offer some great views towards Manchester and over the Peak District. Other than some walking on quiet lanes at the start and end of the walk we will be following paths or tracks. Most of the walk will be fairly easy but there will be a few steep ascents /descents which may be challenging for some (total ascent / descent about 190m). The terrain is generally good but there could be some muddy patches particularly if there has been rain during the week. Dogs are welcome on the walk but may need to be on a lead in accordance with National Trust guidelines / signage and particularly when we are walking near deer or livestock.

There are a couple of easy stiles along the route and potentially one “ladder” type stile over a stone wall. Walking boots are essential for this walk.
The walk will incorporate visits to The Lantern and The Keep – two of Lyme Park’s landmarks. We will aim to have our lunch stop near the Lantern before dropping down to pass the Hall itself.  Please bring food / drink as usual for our lunch stop.  Depending on time we may be able to stop at at the Timber Yard cafe for a brew, there are also toilets here.  At the end of the walk we could have a drink in The Ram’s Head pub.
Risk assessment : A basic risk assessment was carried out on Monday 10 April 2023.  A summary of identified risks is below:-
There are no particular risks on this walk, most of the walk takes place in National Trust park land and the standard of paths and tracks is good, these are steep in places so please be prepared for these (we will take out time on these). At the start and end of the walk and possibly in the park itself, we will be walking on narrow roads / lanes, traffic should be very light but we need to be aware of it and walk together on one side of the road. There may also be cyclists in parts so please be aware and listen out for their bells (and the shouts of fellow walkers). Please ensure that you are dressed and equipped properly for the weather on the day – it is very exposed up there and can be colder than you might expect.
Start time and meeting point : Meet at Disley war memorial in the middle of the village. Start time 12:30. Car parking – There may be limited on street parking in Disley, but not much. There are three car parks next to each other – the pub car park; the station car park and a third small car park in between. The third, centre, car park is the only one which doesn’t have restictions so I suggest you park there if you can.  Access is on the left as you drive towards the sation, it is just before the scout hut. As always please consider train travel or car sharing.
Directions to the start : Disley is on the A6 about 6 miles south of Stockport.
